Is there a way I can read a 2004 tax doc with a .tax file extension? Not sure if it was TurboTax.

You could try the TaxPrinter service at http://www.taxprinter.com/?soft=TurboTax . You send them your .tax file and they send you back a PDF of the return, which you can then print with Adobe Reader.

TaxPrinter has no connection with TurboTax.

I'm pretty sure it is TurboTax. That was the file name extension that TurboTax used back then. I don't think any other tax software used the same extension - certainly not any of the major competitors.
