Learning you have high levels of Radon in your home is not good and a cause for cancer. There is a fairly straightforward system that can be installed in the home to correct this. For a tax return, is there a deduction somewhere to assist with the cost of the Radon Mitigation system installation? Wonder if anyone knows about this.
Thank you.
A Radon Mitigation System is not deductible on a federal tax return.
The radon mitigation system is an improvement to the home. You can add the cost of the system to your basis when you sell the home. The increase in the basis might reduce the taxable gain on the sale. But as DoninGA said, there is no credit or deduction on your current tax return for the year that you purchase or install the system.
I'm realizing the responses may be for only if reporting in the Federal Return. I would be asking if there is a deduction for Radon Mitigation system installation in a Massachusetts State Return. Would anyone know this? Or where to find out?
I actually wouldn't expect a deduction in the Federal return. And probably assume to deduction for State either.
Sorry but thanks again.
Try looking on the Massachusetts Department of Revenue web site, or in the Form 1 Instructions, but I didn't find anything.
