Is my son considered a student that i can claim if he has joined the Navy in 2019 and studying nuclear engineering?

Technically, if he was a full-time student from January through May, he qualifies as a student and he may even qualify as your dependent. Click here to see who qualifies as your dependent.  

  • However, if your son files his own tax return and claims himself, you won't be able to claim him as a dependent.

When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them. There may be other tax benefits you can get when you claim a dependent.
