When you say you "filed" it do you mean you actually e-filed a tax return with just one of your W-2's on it? Hit the orange button that said "Transmit Return Now?"
Oh boy. Not OK. You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it. It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox
Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return. If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.
If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund. THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and mail it in. You will need to use a form called a 1040X. You cannot e-file an amended return. They have to be mailed, and it takes at least 2-4 months for the IRS to process an amended return. Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself. Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed
You should definitely wait until you have received all of your W-2's prior to filing your tax return. You can go ahead and enter the W-2 that you do have along with any other required information that you currently have and theTurboTax Online program will automatically save any data entered.
You can then sign out and your progress will be saved and once you have your remaining W-2's you can logon and complete your tax return. To sign out, simply click Sign Out at the bottom left of your screen.
Note: The deadline for providing W-2's to an employee is January 31,2018.
In addition, the IRS will not begin accepting e-filed tax returns until January 29,2018, so you have time.
If you have already filed your tax return meaning you hit Transmit button. You would then need to first wait and see if your tax return is accepted or rejected. If rejected, you can go back and add the W-2's once received and re-submit your tax return.
If accepted, you would need to wait until after you have received your tax refund and Amend your tax return. Current tax year amending Instructions will be available soon.
