If you receive a form 1099-MISC for a legal service plan, then you are not considered as self-employed and do not need to file a Schedule C.
In TurboTax, enter your form 1099-MISC and follow the interview until you arrive at the page titled Did this involve an intent to earn money. Answer that this did not involve an intent to earn money. The amount will be reported as Miscellaneous income and will not be subject to Self-employment tax.
In TurboTax, there is a work-around. Although you may receive this income every year, say that you only receive the 1099-MISC only in 2019, not in previous years and not in 2020, you will then have the screen where you can say that it did not involve an intent to earn money.
Thanks very much for your help. It's too bad that Turbo did not address this. With the amount of UAW members in the U.S., I'm sure that others have this same issue.
It may be reported as Other income, but Turbo tax program still makes you file a schedule C
See MinhT1's post in this chain. TurboTax asks the questions to be sure you report the income correctly, however, in specific instances, the answers you provided do not always get the correct results. @36250
If we don’t need to file schedule C, how do we answer questions so software doesn’t think we should. I said Legal Service was only for 2019 and was able to say it was not income. Software still thinks I need schedule c. Please help. I’ve spent hours trying different ways.
