Is a 2020 1040 required for someone who died on 1/4/2020?

My mother-in-law died on 1/4.  She did receive a social security check for January of around $1800.  All other assets were in a trust and I will be filing a 1041 for the closing out of that trust.  Is a 1040 also required for personal taxes?  There was also an insurance payment coving expenses for her long term care facility but it was received after her death and I was planning to include that amount in the 1041.  Thanks

Yes, you are required to file a 2020 tax return for someone who died on January 4, 2020.

The IRS will allow tax returns for deceased taxpayers (also called decedent returns) to be e-filed.

Many (but not all) states allow decedent tax returns to be e-filed as well. We'll let you know when you get ready to e-file the state return.
