IRS sent a different refund amount, now trying to amend tax return and TT says I owe a lot more than I should.

I had claimed my son this year because it looked like we would get a larger refund that way, but it turns out that TurboTax was adding in the stimulus checks for my son as if we had not received them (they went to my husband because he usually claims our son).  So my actual tax refund was about $1300 less than Turbotax said it would be.

I am now trying to amend the return with my husband claiming our son.  But it says I owe a lot more than I should because it thinks I received the larger amount.

Is there a way to change the amount of the original refund to what I actually received?

I think I figured it out.  I went to the Tools tab and clicked "My Tax Data".  Scrolled down to Form 1040-x and clicked " Go To Form"  That brought it up so I could change the amount in box 18.  Now the amount I owe looks right.

Hope I did it right!

It sounds like you were able to enter the original refund on your amended return.  As you go through the amended section, it should carry that information automatically if the amended return is started correctly.  I will place the link were for your convenience so if you want to review you can.

As long as your original refund is shown on Line 18, Form 1040-X you are all set.
