Irs requesting $1400 repayment of recovery tax relief refund from 12/2024 from a processing error. Anyone else have this?

Called IRS when received $1400 check 12/2024 and wasn’t made aware this was a for a 2021 credit. Concerned about repayment options and consequences of the notice. I’m paying down debt and carry a low balance in checking. Just getting by with minimum payments on cards and expenses. This notice is difficult to manage

IRS processing error, vague reason for the $1400 deposit. I did not ask for this credit and made to feel as I did something wrong I do not have the money to repay and concerned about financial stress of repayment request.

If you agree with the notice and know you have to pay the amount back, you can apply for a payment plan online. First, you will need to create an IRS Online Account, and once that is complete, you can apply for a payment plan.

It’s showing in process and not amount due. 2 weeks till available. Spoke with irs yesterday and maybe they are doing an investigation of the requested amount. It clearly shows the amount due and the error on tax transcript.

I’m concerned a payment plan with irs will screw up credit relationship with Chase as this is where I also have my checking account. I suppose my head is spinning over the unexpected additional expense

Generally, a payment plan with the IRS won't be reported to the credit bureaus or impact your credit score. However, if you fail to make an attempt to pay tax debt and don't make the necessary arrangement, your debt may be sent to collections.

I know. If it is seen as a reoccurring ach from irs it will probably be a red flag to Chase
