IRS Rejecting Clean Vehicle Credit – But I Have Valid Seller Report and IRS Confirmation

I’m filing my 2024 tax return and claimed the Clean Vehicle Credit for a Tesla Model Y purchased on 12/31/2024.

I received the Clean Vehicle Seller Report from Tesla, which includes:

  • Correct VIN

  • My SSN

  • Date of sale and placed in service: 12/31/2024

I also received a letter from the IRS confirming the Clean Vehicle Credit transfer, listing the same VIN and sale date.

However, my e-filed return keeps getting rejected with the following message:

“The e-File database indicates this vehicle was not purchased during the tax period of the return.”

All information appears accurate and timely. Has anyone run into this issue before? What steps did you take to resolve it? I’d appreciate any advice or next steps on how to move forward.

Thanks in advance!

You'll need to contact the IRS to find out why their computer records don't show the purchase in 2024 when you got a letter from them confirming the transaction

Call 800-829-1040
1) Choose your language,
2) Then choose option 2
3) Then 1
4) Then 3
5) Then 2
6) When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN do nothing – wait - - After it asks twice, you will get another menu
7) Then 2
😎 Then 3

you should then be transferred to an agent. Note when its phone lines are busy you may be on hold for a long while or disconnected
