Inmates as dependent on 2022 taxes

Can I claim my son an inmate as a dependent on my 2022 taxes?

No.   So sorry for your sad situation.  But if your son was incarcerated for 2022, he cannot be claimed as your dependent.  You did not support him--he was supported by the department of corrections.   He is being housed, clothed and fed by the government.   Gifts or spending money you send to him are just that---gifts--which are not deductible.

@WOMANOFGOD Sorry---- in order to claim a dependent you must provide over half of their support.   The government is spending tens of thousands of dollars to support your incarcerated son-- possibly more than $100, 000 per year.   Are you spending more than that?
