I was living and working in Hawaii in 2021. I lost my job, and I filed for and received unemployment from Hawaii. In Apr 2021 I moved to Colorado and started to work there.
I have a 1099-G from Hawaii and W2 from CO. Do I have to file a state tax return with Hawaii or CO or do have to file a two states tax return like a part-year resident?
Assuming CO became your new resident state in 2021, you will be filing two part-year resident tax returns. One for HI and one for CO. Since you started the year with HI as your resident state, you should complete the HI state part year resident return first, before you even start the CO state part-year resident return. This is so you don't get double-taxed on income in both states.
Also so you don't get double-taxed, and I can't stress this enough..... Read The Small Print! on every single screen. It *will* matter.
