In updating my W-4, TurboTax changed my filing status from "married filing jointly" to "single" for my wife and I. Why?

There's no explanation I can find in TurboTax of why it would change your filing status in going through a W-4 update.

I also do not have an examination,  But please double check your filing status in My Info.

You can correct the Social Security Number or delete a dependent in My Info.

Log into TurboTax

  1. On the left sidebar
  2. Select My Info or Personal Info
  3. Click the down arrow.
  4. You can see your Information
  5. Click the down arrow
  6. Your filling status is on the left.

This answer is way off from the question being asked.  I'm not asking about my filing status on my taxes.  I'm asking about the filing status on my W-4.  TurboTax asked if I'd like to update my W-4.  In doing so, it changed my W-4 filing status from "married filing jointly" to "single."  There's no explanation of why it would do this or why I should file as a "single" even though I'm married.  Which leads me to wonder if I should submit this new W-4 that TurboTax has created to my employer, or if it will completely mess-up the withholdings for the remainder of this year; or if I should just leave everything alone.

There is an option under Other Tax Situations where you are asked what your filing status will be next year that might have been changed.  You may need to review this area.

To do this, log back into TurboTax.

  1. Select Other Tax Situations.
  2. Scroll down to the section titled Other Tax Forms.
  3. Select update  to the right of Form W-4 and estimated taxes.

4.  Select yes on the screen asking if you want to change your W-4 withholdings for 2025.

5.  You should be able to select your 2025 Filing status on the next screen.  Review your input here to make sure the correct filing status is selected here.
