IF my 1099-DIV has a number in box 12, as tax exempt dividend, but NO state listed, how do I report that?

I do not live in a state that would exempt some investments

choose More than One State when TT asks for it.

On the 1099-DIV, Box 12 (tax exempt Dividends) is not exclusive to the state return, but it also applies to the Federal return.  On your 1040 federal tax return, your regular dividends are reported on line 3a and the tax exempt are posted to 2a.

To post Box 12 for the 1099-DIV:

  1. Select Federal
  2. Wages & Income
  3. Scroll to Investments & Savings and
  4. select Show More,
  5. Start or Revisit next to Dividends on 1099-DIV - Okay!
  6. Select the bar with your dividends on it.
  7. Then choose [Edit]
  8. At the bottom left of the form there is a check box
  9. My form has info in other boxes (this is uncommon).
  10. Check this box and you will have access to box 12.
