If Mary filed for 2022 jointly, but her husband had died in 2022 what PIN will she use for 2023? Her PIN? Her deceased Husband? Tried both, but neither were acceptable

Yes, she would definitely use her own PIN.

That being said, there are two PINs on a tax return. The IP PIN and the five digit PIN.

The five digit PIN at the end of the return is a substitute for a pen and ink signature. You just make it up. The five digit PIN from the previous year is no longer used to validate your signature in TurboTax, so the return can't be rejected for a mismatched PIN in TurboTax.

The IP PIN is a six digit number that comes from the IRS. Not everyone has one, but if you have one, you can't file your tax return without it.

If you don't know the IP PIN for Mary for this year, you can retrieve it from the IRS. Follow this link to get started.

Once you have it, this is how to enter it in TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign in to your account.
  2. Scroll down to Other Tax Situations, select the down arrow to the right.
  3. Select Review/ Edit.
  4. Select the down arrow to the right of Other Return Info
  5. Select Start or Update to the right of Identity Protection PIN.
  6. Answer the first question Yes.
  7. Select  Add to the right of your name.
  8. Enter the number on the next screen.
  9. At this point, you can continue your tax return.

Much too difficult.  I just paper filed them.  Seems to be a flaw in the software.  The rejection actually said I needed last years 5 digit pin in order to make a match.
