If I worked in Alabama in 2016 but my employer on my w-2 is listed as the payroll company (based in Dallas, Texas), did I earn income outside of Alabama?

If you worked in Alabama in 2016, you did not work outside of Alabama.  It does not matter that your paycheck is coming from another state.
