If I use my shortened first name, will that cause the IRS to reject my tax return?

I accidentally submitted my 1040 tax return with my shortened first name of Chris rather than Christopher, and didn't include my middle initial either. I have my full first name and middle initial on both my W2 and social security card.

Will I likely have my tax return rejected by the IRS? The last name and SS# match, but the first name will be off + middle initial missing.

If you have already filed your tax return you should be fine. The IRS will usually match the beginning letters of your last name with your Social Security Number.

If rejected, you can make the correction by following the steps below.

If accepted, you would not need to make any changes you would just verify the spelling for accuracy on next year's tax return.

To edit your Personal Info:

  1. Open your tax return.
  2. Click on “My Info” (left-hand column.
  3. Edit your name.
