If I recently retired from the military and moved to another state how do my state taxes work? I have lived in states that have been income tax free most of my career and now will reside in a state that collects income tax. We moved to PA in Sep 2024.

Information flows from your federal tax return to your state return when you use TurboTax.   If PA taxes your pension, then the software will follow the state rules.   However, PA does not tax retirement income.   If you have other income in addition to the military pension, you may be taxed for part of the year by PA.  When you prepare your federal return, make sure you say in MY INFO that you moved in 2024.

Thank you for your military service to our country.

You are required to pay state tax if you live or earn income in a state that requires state income tax.

Because you moved to PA in September 2024, you will pay PA State tax as a 2024 part year PA resident.

Congratulations on your retirement!
