If I'm on my parent's Marketplace insurance, how do I answer "Did you have health insurance coverage in 2018" since I will not receive a 1095-A?

I had health insurance coverage all year through the Marketplace under my parents.  I am listed as a covered individual on Form 1095-A, but my mom is the Recipient.  I will not receive a Form 1095-A.  If I answer "Yes" to the question asking if I had health insurance coverage, TurboTax states I need to enter my 1095-A before I file.  So, should I answer the question "No"?

You answer yes, because you did have insurance through the Marketplace. You will include your parent's 1095-A. Since the form covers persons on two different tax returns, you will need to prorate the amounts. Your parents have probably already claimed 100%. You can prorate between you in any amounts you choose as long as both add up to 100%.

Thanks for your help, Coleen!  I finally got to the point where TT asked for a percentage of the 1095-A to claim on my return.  It would be nice if TT would include that in their "Help."

if your parents put 100% what did you put down? Going through the same issue. Was on my parents health insurance through the marketplace and got a letter from IRS that they need my 1095-a and form 8962. Have to go in and amend taxes but its so confusing

Here is how to get the form 8962 filled out. Please note: You are NOT going to amend your return and you are NOT going to add a state return. These directions are quirky but will get the job done.

  1.  Log into your return
  2. Select that you want to add a state - this lets you into the program without the amend process starting.
  3. In the top right corner, locate the Magnifying glass/search
  4. enter the exact words 1095a
  5. Select the first entry Jump to 1095a
  6. Fill in the 1095a information
  7. Print and mail the 8962

The IRS may adjust your refund once they receive your form 8962.

So I still have to put in the marketplace form even though I didn't pay anything?

Whether you're listed as dependent on your parents tax return or not will determine how you enter any Marketplace Insurance (1095-A) information.

If you're listed as a dependent on your parents’ tax return, you won't have any health insurance questions to answer on your own return. TurboTax will tell you Since someone is claiming you on their 2023 taxes, you don't have to complete Health Insurance.

If you're on your parents' Form 1095-A, but aren't filing as their dependent, select your situation for instructions.
