If I had my roof replaced with new asphalt shingles, but my contractor didn’t break up the material cost from the labor cost, how do I file the expense for material?

If it's your residence, you can add the entire cost of the new roof to your basis in the home. Nothing is deductible on your income tax return. Increasing the basis will reduce your (possibly taxable) gain when you sell.
