If I file an extension with TurboTax, when I'm ready to file my taxes, do I have to that through Turbo Tax? Or can I use an independent preparer?

I'm not yet ready to file my taxes as I'm waiting on some information. But I estimate that I should receive a refund. If I file an extension with TurboTax, when I'm ready to finally file my taxes, do I have to that through Turbo Tax as well? Or can I use an independent preparer? I think my situation is just a little over my head this year.

No, filing an extension in TurboTax does not obligate you to complete your taxes in TurboTax.  For information on how to file an extension, please see the below help article.

How do I file an IRS extension (Form 4868) in TurboTax Online?

When you file for an extension, you're expected to pay all or most of amount you owe.

You don't owe anything.

If you know you will get a refund,

you don't need an extension of time.

There is no penalty for filing after April 18th.

If you still want an extension,
You don’t need to file Form 4868 if you make a payment using the IRS
electronic payment options. Your extension will be automatically
processed when you pay part or all of your estimated income tax
electronically. You can pay online or by phone.

Any amount will do.

You can pay all or part of your estimated income tax due and **indicate that the payment is for an extension** using Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, or using a credit or debit card. Your extension is then automatically granted and you will receive a confirmation number for your records.
