If I always got tax returns for the past few years, how it is that I have to pay more than 800 dollars more for taxes this year?

There have been significant changes to the tax laws that are impacting refunds.

The personal exemptions were eliminated, itemized deductions were capped or eliminated, and the criteria for certain tax credits have changed.

There was also a change in the IRS withholding tables. Now, employers withhold less tax to more closely match tax due, rather than create refunds.
