I worked from home last year as a personal assistant. My employer doesn't have a company but paid me in personal checks. How would I file?

You are a self-employed "independent contractor" and you will pay self-employment tax of 15.3% for Social Security and Medicare, as well as ordinary income tax.  You will need to complete a schedule c to enter any expenses you incur for the work you are performing.
