If you have a 1099-MISC form, the government considers you an Independent contractor. You're self-employed and you report your income and expenses on a Schedule C.

If you believe you were improperly classified as an independent contractor by an employer, you can use Form 8919, Uncollected Social Security and Medicare Tax on Wages to figure and report your share of uncollected Social Security and Medicare taxes due on your compensation (pay).

You'll need one of these TurboTax products:

To set up a Schedule C and enter your 1099-MISC income:

  1. Open your return.
  2. (To do this, sign in to TurboTax and click the Take me to my return button.)
  3. Search for “1099-misc” at the top. In the search results, click the “Jump to” link.
  4. Now follow the screens to enter your 1099-MISC info and answer some questions.
