I was working at a therapy office and my boss payed me through an app called zelle. I received a 1099-MISC. I do not know how to enter it, it was not self-employment?

Your boss did pay you as though you were an independent contractor which is the same as self employment. You can choose to treat it as self employment or complete an SS-8 Form for an IRS decision. This will require an upgrade to TurboTax Deluxe.

Basically, if the person or company you worked for told you when to be there, when to leave, how to do your job and provided the tools to do your job you may be considered an employee.  If you completed your work with your own tools, at your own work location and had a contract for the cost of the job you were to perform by a specified date, then you would be an independent contractor.

If you choose to file as an employee you can follow the steps below and pay only your portion of social security and medicare tax, as well as your personal income tax.  The IRS will go back to the employer for their share of social security and medicare taxes. Form 8919 will be completed as part of your tax return.

The way to report this income will be under Less Common income.

While you are logged into your TurboTax account follow the steps.

  1. Select the Personal tab, then Personal Income
  2. Select I'll choose what I work on
  3. Choose to see all income categories
  4. Scroll to Less Common Income
  5. Select Miscellaneous Income
  6. Select Other income not already reported on a Form W-2 or Form 1099
  7. Select Yes, then Continue past Household and Sick Income
  8. Select Yes, then Continue
  9. Select Employee compensation that was not reported on a W-2
  10. Continue to see the information about the SS-8 and enter your information (image attached)
