I was legally separated during 2017. During 2017 husband gave money to me to help out (not court ordered). The amounts totaled $20,474. Do I need to pay taxes on this?

No, the amounts you were given that were not court-ordered are not reported on your tax return as income.

If the money had been court-ordered, then it could be considered alimony and would be taxable income.
