I was instructed to upgrade to Premier software because I had a small oil royalty income. I have used the Deluxe version for the last six years with no problems.

my question is why did I have to upgrade to the Premier version to input royalty income? I have used Deluxe the last several years.

The TurboTax online version will require you to upgrade to Premier at minimum to input royalties. That is because only Premier and Self-Employed online versions handle Schedule E, which is where those royalties are reported.

But you can use the desktop version of Deluxe and input it there as well. The desktop version of Deluxe will handle Schedule E. You can find the desktop version here https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/compare/desktop/
