I was asked if I’ll be filing a state nonresident return for the first time in 2021? How they asked me “will” ( future) but put last year( in 2021)

I can’t be filing in 2021 I’m filing in 2022 for 2021. I’m a a little confused with this question. I’ll appreciate any answers

The question should be asking, 'Are you filing a state nonresident return for the first time for 2021?'

Please share which state return you are filing so that we can make note of the awkward wording and request that it be updated.

Nonresident Information

Answer the following questions regarding your nonresident status:

Will you be filing a Maine nonresident return for the first time in 2021?

this is exactly copy paste

and another note when I did reply to that question and then go over the state again my answer was being changed

Thank you for that information.

It is not necessarily a problem that your answer was not retained when you went over the state return again.  Not every piece of information you enter is saved.  Sometimes it is simply used to navigate you to the next section or next page that you need to go to as you complete your return.

ok, this makes sense but on one question I put “yes” as an answer and when I go again over the state it has been changed to “No”. The thing you did explain is very helpful but what about completely changed answer?

 Thank you

It could be the same situation as I described earlier.  Just in this case, the default answer is 'no' until you change it to 'yes'.

@AnnetteB6

In this case there’s no need to delete the state and start filling the info again because it will be still the default answer, right?

If you answered YES, then it will stay YES until you return to this screen where you will have to reconfirm that it is YES.

@BillM223

The answer keeps changing though, you mark one thing then you go back and it has been changed. The lady did explain it above but the thing you’re saying that if you marked Yes it will stay Yes it’s not like that for all of questions.
