Just fill out your return and enter all your forms in the same place. The 1040SR is the same as the normal 1040 tax return.   If you are over 65 you get the SR version that just has bigger type.  You still use the same Turbo Tax program, either the Online version or the Desktop CD/Download program.  It doesn't matter which 1040 you use.

The 1040SR was new starting in 2019.  It is the same as the regular 1040 just larger type so it prints on 3 pages instead of 2 and the Standard Deduction chart is added to page 1.  But has the same line numbers.    You automatically get the SR if you or your spouse are 65.  If you are using the Desktop program there is a way to force the one you want.  You don't get any more deductions or credits by using the 1040SR.

When you print it will print on the 1040SR even if you see only the 1040 on the screen.  You automatically get the 1040SR if you or your spouse is 65 or older.  In the Desktop program you can tell it which one to print.

Form 1040 and 1040-SR are virtually identical in function. Form 1040-SR has larger type and larger boxes to write numbers in, making it slightly easier to read and fill out on paper.

If you launch TurboTax and begin answering questions, TurboTax will determine the best type of form for federal and for state returns based on your answers.

Anyone 65 or older can opt to use Form 1040-SR.  After you enter your date of birth, this form will automatically complete with the information you complete.

 Here are the steps.

  1. Open TurboTax Account > Personal Info > Start/Edit.

     2. Enter your name, birthdate, SSN and occupation.

      3.  Complete entering your information on the above screen.

       4.   Complete entering you tax documents, TurboTax will generate a 1040-SR.
