I thought I was filing a past tax return w2 for 2022 and I didn't realize that it was filing it under 2024?

How can I fix the problem it already was filed

It depends if  you already submitted your return? If not you can delete the W2 from your return by going to wages and income and then wages and salaries.

 

This should bring you to a summary screen and then you can delete the W2 from the screen.  If you have submitted your return and when it is accepted by the IRS, you will need to amend your return to remove your W2. Here is how to amend in Turbo Tax Online.

 

  1. log into Turbo Tax
  2. In the landing page, scroll to the bottom of the page.
  3. Look for amend( change return) 
  4. After you are in the return, remove the W2 in the manner I described.

If you use Turbo Tax desktop:

 

  1. Open your return
  2. Go to other tax situations 
  3. Other Tax Forms
  4. Amend a return

If you prepared your return with Turbo tax, you may amend your 2022 tax return.

 

To amend your return using Turbo Tax Online.

  1. Log into Turbo Tax
  2. Select Scroll down Your tax returns & documents in your landing page.
  3. Select Amend (change) 2022 return.  

To amend using the 2022 Desktop Software, go to:

  1. Federal Taxes
  2. Other Tax Situations>other tax forms
  3. Amend a return

YEP, the Online software is ONLY for 2024 right now.  The Online software cannot do past year's taxes.

 

If you hit that "Transmit" button, and the IRS (and State?) were "Accepted", then you have to wait until they issue your Refund, or you have to pay the taxes that were due.

 

Then, at the end of February you start an Amended 2024 tax return, removing that 2022 W-2 entirely, and entering your 2024 W-2 and changing any other data that applies to 2024 ONLY.  If you had a refund on the original, you may have to pay it all back....depends on what your changes are....so don't spend it until you know.

For 2022, you have to download and install the desktop software on a full MAC or Windows computer....and print/mail in the resulting forms at the Post Office.
