I thought I only was taxed on 85% of my SS income

Up to 85% of your Social Security may be taxable, depending on the other income you received.  Look at line 6a and 6b to see how much of your Social Security was taxable.

Yes, the maximum amount of your social security income that is taxed is 85%.  If you look at lines 6a and 6b of your form 1040, you should see that box a is only 85% of box b. 

 

If you are seeing more than that taxed, did you enter it in the correct spot?  To enter your 1099-SSA by selecting the following:

  1. Income
  2. Your Retirement
  3. Start next to 1099-SSA, social security

Where do you see more SS being taxed?  If you are looking at a summary screen or review screen those show the full amount as income and lump a lot of stuff together. You need to check the actual 1040 form line 6a & 6b  and make sure it's right. Before filing you can preview the 1040 or print the whole return
