I started a small home business in August 2017. It is a sole proprietorship. I only earned a little over $2700 but my costs were way over that. What do I do?

You can take the loss for your business.  To do this you will need to add the business information, income and associated expenses.

You will need the TurboTax Self-Employed.  This can be done from your Free Edition by going to the Self-Employment Tab in the income section.  You will assist to add your business and upgrade.

If you choose not to upgrade to the Self-Employed edition, you are not required by the IRS to claim business losses to your 2017 return.
