I sent a payment of $300 with my 2020 Return. Now, TTax says I will get a $1200 refund due to CARES ACT . Do I get the $300 back too? How? The Amned return says nothing.

Turbo Tax's Amended Return makes no mention of the money I already sent in as directed in the initial return I sent in. Does the refund it now reports include the money I already sent in? How do I get that money back?

If you've already made a payment to the IRS of $300, and you now are getting a $1,200 stimulus payment, the IRS will make adjustments.

If you owed $300 on your original 2020 tax return you will not get it back.  However, you will get a check or a deposit of $1,200.

Thanks so much for your help. Sorry I wasn't clear. I owed $300 in fed taxes. But after CARES, they won't count all of my unemployment, and TTax calculates that I should instead get a refund of my fed taxes (NOT stimulus, which I already got) of $1200.  BUT the TTax Amended Return does not tell me whether that takes into account the $300 I paid with my original return or not.  Not sure how to get that back. Thanks.

If you filed an amended return, you should have started out with a balance of zero.  That would indicate that TurboTax expected that you had already paid the $300, so your balance is zero.  If that is true, you should get a refund of $1,200, which accounts for the $300 you paid.

  • Great idea. You gave me a great lead.  I compared the Amended return with the original return, both prepared by TTax. The Amendment does not take into account the $300 I sent the IRS with my first return as directed by TTax. The Amendment is basing the $1200 refund solely on my revised income. I spoke with someone at TTax about this. She confirmed that the program calculated the $1200 refund from my revised income and that it did not account for the $300 I already sent in with my first return.  She also did not have any guidance right now about how to recover that $300.  However, she urged me to wait for the IRS to review my return and make their own revisions and send me back the refund they think I should have. I'm hopeful. It appears I should get $1500 (the $300 plus the $1200 new refund). We'll see. If not, I'm prepared to file the Amended return seeking the $1200 and file for a rebate of the $300 I"ve paid in already. I sympathize with TTax as the feds continue to change the rules of the game.  They must be working around the clock.  I'd say I surely got my money's worth out of them this year.  I'm also sorry I filed early.  Thanks for your help
