I recieved a 1099-NEC from a company I didn't work for or receive a payment from

Hi there,

This week I received a 1099-NEC for a company I didn't work for or receive any form of payment from. How do I report this fraudulent 1099 to?

I've made multiple attempt to call and email them and they don't respond.

Thanks!

From the IRS:

If you received a Form W-2 or Form 1099 from an unknown employer:

  • Don't include the income on your tax return or file an amended return.

  • Contact the Social Security Administration. They'll review your earnings with you to ensure their records are correct.
  • Allow several weeks for the SSA to update their records.

The IRS website states that if you receive a Form 1099 from an unknown employer, don't include the income on your tax return.  Refer to the IRS website Guide to employment-related identity theft - IRS.
