I received the advanced child tax credit payments but did not deposit one of the checks. How can I verify and report this on my tax return?

First I want to verify from IRS that I did not deposit the check.

Whether or not the check was cashed or deposited is not relevant.  The IRS should only be notified if the check was lost, stolen or damaged.

You are required to report all advance child tax credits you received in 2021 on your 2021 tax return.

You can request a transcript of your account from the IRS.  The transcript will give you a summary of the transactions on your account..

Its very relevant to me because I have to pay it all back.  Why would I have to pay back something if it was never deposited?

Why do you think you have to pay the advance child tax credits back?  Are you not claiming a dependent on your 2021 tax return that you claimed on your 2020 tax return?

I requested the transcript but I believe this still just shows that a check was issued.  There were 6 payments total given to me.  5 of the 6 I clearly see deposited into my checking account.  the 6th I do not see anywhere so I do not want to "pay that one back" if I never deposited it

Apparently our income went over the threshold and we are not eligible for the tax child tax credit in 2021(at least not the full credit).  I didnt ask for the advance obviously.. they were just sent to me.  According to records the first 2 were mailed to me and the last 4 came as direct deposit.  I cannot see that I deposited the first one anywhere.

Is the Adjusted Gross Income on your 2021 tax return at or above these limits? -

  • $120,000 if you are married and filing a joint return or if filing as a qualifying widow or widower;
  • $100,000 if you are filing as head of household; and
  • $80,000 if you are a single filer or are married and filing a separate return.

Deposit the check and then add that money to the money that you are paying back.

yes,  combined our AGI went over 200k in 2021.  Married filing jointly, 3 kids under 17.  In turbotax with all the numbers entered its clearly the advanced child tax credit that we are having to pay back which is why its important for me to know if I deposited the 575 dollar check or not.

lol.. I would definitely do that if I still had the check.  Check was from July last year and I have no idea what happened to it.  I dont see it deposited anywhere.

The IRS should be able to send you a replacement check.  I have done the same thing with letting checks sit around for more than six months and ended up losing the money because could not get a replacement.  At least now I can deposit a check with my phone and not have to put it aside until I am close to a bank.
