I also received the same letter about 4 weeks after I filed my return. I called the number in the letter, expecting to stay on the line for at least 30 min but everything was resolved within 10 min.
She asked me a few questions (ssn, amount to be refunded, name, address, filing status, etc...), just basic questions to ensure you are who you say you are to ensure the return is not filed fraudulently.
The lady said I should expect my return in 2 to 4 weeks and
I don't need to send in any documentations, just sign and fax her the
letter.
Exactly the same thing just happened to me. If you get this letter, call first.
I agree - same thing happened to me, but I called and was able to resolve it over the phone.
Did you call the 800 number? No one will answer when I call. I keep getting automated response

Call 916.845.7088; that number should be listed on the bottom of the letter you receive. It's also listed on their web page here: https://www.ftb.ca.gov/Bills_and_Notices/notices.shtml
Any updates on this? Anyone get their return after making the call and verifying your credential?
Hi galelati, I received my refund about 3 weeks after talking to the IRS person on the phone. She said to expect the refund between 3 and 4 weeks and sure enough the refund was deposited into my acct right before the 3-week mark. Needless to say, I was a bit shocked that this whole thing was so fast and efficient.
they are trying to reduce fraud yet they want you to mail them all of your confidential documents with personal information. what if that package gets stolen then someone will use that info for credit fraud
From CA:
We implemented a new letter, FTB 3904, Request to Confirm Tax Return Filing. This letter will put the potential victim on early notice. The letter asks the valid taxpayer to notify us whether or not they have filed a tax return. We only send this notice if the tax return looks highly suspicious. We send the letter to the last address we had on file for the taxpayer, not to the address on the suspicious tax return.
https://www.ftb.ca.gov/Archive/Professionals/Taxnews/2014/December/04.shtml
I got this form. Do I just check Yes or No and send it back or I need to provide the list of documents listed along?
How can I verify the notice is real? It asks for every ID I have. Seems like a fraud since the envelope zip does not match zip on ftb.ca.gov.

I felt the same way I just received the same form I do not feel comfortable faxing all of this ID to the number when they should already have this info. literally every form of ID I have was requested except my library card
I just got this notice too. As others have stated, it asks you to send copies of literally every form of ID you have. I'm not comfortable putting this stuff in the mail! The statement above doesn't seem to match my experience either (my federal return has already been paid so it must not have looked suspicious to the IRS), and the addresses, form names, etc. are all different on the form itself, the phone message and the website. I don't know what to do.
I just received this letter, too. I went to this web: https://www.ftb.ca.gov/Bills_and_Notices/notices.shtml
and called the number. They asked me a couple questions, including my SSN number and they told me I dont need to send those docs anymore. Everything is fine now.
Weilin_Chao, wow! thank you so much for posting your comment. I went to the website too, and called the number. I was also able to provide my SSN and a few other details from the return, including the direct deposit account number, and was also told that I don't need to send these docs. My return is now being processed. Whew, what a relief! Thank you!
Thank so so much Weilin_Chao!
I received the same letter. I called the number, gave some information, & was told I didn't need to send the documents requested. I was told refund is on the way! Huge relief!
Many thanks!!
Hopefully I can call tomorrow and get this dealt with. Why are they sending these letters if we can just call and confirm?
I got this too, and I'm wondering if it's because I asked to have my refund deposited to my brokerage account for the first time. All previous years I had it deposited to my regular checking account.
I got this letter too and asks for several documents. Seems suspicious. Wellin what number did you call?
The number for California Franchise Tax Board is:
916-845-7088
That wasn't the response I got. I called that same number ending in 7088 and the lady asked me to send in the documents (or fax) just like the letter requested. I still don't feel comfortable doing this. Did I just get unlucky and get someone who doesn't care?
