I received a Dissertation Award the year following receiving my PhD. I was asked to complete a W9 which I did. Should I receive some sort of 1099 for this award?

I was working at a different institution and in a different state than the institution that issued the award. There was no work expected or required in return, and it was not an award I applied for.

Yes, you should receive a Form 1099-MISC for the Dissertation Award.

If you did not receive Form 1099-MISC, you can go ahead and report it in TurboTax by following these instructions:

  • Sign In to TurboTax Online
  • Click "Take Me to my Return"
  • Click "Federal" from the left side of your screen
  • Scroll down to "Less Common Income" and click "Show More"
  • Click "Start" to the right of Form 1099-A, 1099-C
  • Scroll down to "Other Reportable Income" and click "Start"
  • On the Any Other Taxable Income? screen, click Yes
  • On the Other Taxable Income screen, add a description (Award) and the dollar amount
  • Continue with the onscreen interview until complete
