I received a 1099-MISC for a sleep study and got paid for "sleeping" while hooked up to wires. Was this the "service" they are inquiring about in order to earn my check?

This was a medical research study where I spent 2 nights hooked up to wires, then went home for the day. That is all I did. The question on Turbo Tax was whether I performed a service for my money earned. Do I answer that yes or no?

Answer no.

To enter income from a research study:

  1. Type 1099-misc in the find box and click find.
  2. Select the Jump to 1099-misc link.
  3. This will take you to the 1099-MISC screen.
  4. Either enter 1099-MISC income or if you landed on the 1099-MISC Summary screen, click on Add Another 1099-MISC and enter your 1099-MISC form.
  5. On the Does one of these uncommon situation apply? screen, click on I was in a research study and this was the payment.
  6. Answer No to Did you perform a service to earn the money Research study paid you?
  7. Continue and answer the follow-up questions about your 1099-MISC income.
