I received $104.78 from a class action settlement. TurboTax is requiring the Payer's federal EIN. I didnt receive a 1099-MISC so don't have #. How can I get this info?

If you didn’t receive a 1099-MISC, follow these steps to report the income:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax and select the Take me to my return button on the main screen.
  2. Type “lawsuit settlement” in the Search box and then select the “Jump to” link.
  3. Answer Yes to the question Any Other Taxable Income?
  4. Enter a brief description and the amount you received and click Continue.

Interest earned on settlements is taxable income and should be entered as a Form 1099-INT.

I also received money from a class action lawsuit but have received no 1099-MISC.  I have followed the steps you have outlined but it will not allow me to e-file without entering the EIN.  How do I resolve this?

I just returned from my weekend and I saw your question.  I've edited my answer above to answer and resolve your issue.

This still doesn't help if we dont have the EIN number.

The alternative to posting income as Form 1099-MISC is to post it as Other Income, which will not require the EIN. To do this in TurboTax, follow these steps:

  1. From the left menu, go to Federal and select the first tab, Wages & Income
  2. Add more income by scrolling down to the last option, Less Common Income, and Show more
  3. Scroll down to the last option, Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C and Start
  4. Choose the last option, Other reportable income and Start and Yes
  5. Enter the applicable description and amount and Continue

Physical injury or sickness settlements are not taxable unless certain circumstances apply. For more details, see: Are legal settlements taxable?
