I purchase the software with 5 Federal and 1 State (NY). I want to file 3 (Federal) Can I file NY returns for all 3 or do I need to purchase NY twice more?

I was hoping to file 3 Federal & 3 NY State Returns. My Kids are over 18 and file their own returns. Do I need to purchase 2 additional copies of the NY filing software?

No you do not have to purchase additional copies of the NY state software.  When you use desktop software you get 5 federal e-files and the software to file for one state--as many state returns as you need to file.  You will be charged an extra fee to e-file those state returns.  You can avoid the fee by printing and mailing the state returns.
