I owe the IRS $4300. When I chose to download my return, the first four documents were payment vouchers for $1800...??? (7200?)

Those were most likely 1040-ES vouchers for 2017 estimated taxes.

The vouchers print automatically if you didn't have enough taxes withheld last year or if the program detects a spike in income for the year. The vouchers are a just a suggestion to avoid possible underpayment penalties. If these do not apply to your situation, you may disregard.

If you feel the amount is too much, you can revisit the section and enter the scenarios that you think may apply to your 2017 income. To navigate to the section:

  • In your open return, select My Account
  • Tools
  • Topic Search
  • Type '1040-es, estimated tax for next year' in the box, then select GO

If you have already filed, need to print 1040-ES vouchers for 2017, and can't get your return to open:

  • Log into your account
  • Select MyTurboTax in the upper left
  • Under Some Things you can do, select Add state (to open up your return)
  • Then navigate to section in steps above
