I only received partial stimulus, I was missing income for one dependent. How do I file for the missing income?

When you complete your tax return, TurboTax will prompt you to enter the amount of the stimulus payment you received at the end of the Other Tax Situations interview section of the program.  Be sure to enter the amounts of each stimulus payment you received as there is a section for both payments, including the payment that could have been received in 2021.

If you only received one payment, be sure to enter zero in the second stimulus payment box.

If you were entitled to an additional stimulus payment for your dependent but did not receive it, you will be given a tax credit on your tax return for the amount you should have received.  The IRS will not be issuing you a check for the missing income.

Please see the attached link for more information on the stimulus payments.

I had the same issue, however turbo tax is saying it’s correct when it is not. Still have a 3rd child that I never received payment for either stimulus payment. How can you file the form and bypass the turbo tax system being incorrect?

Your dependent that did not get a stimulus payment would not be qualified if they are over the age of 17. In order for a dependent to be eligible, the dependent must be your qualifying child under the age of 17. Please keep in mind that although they may be dependents on your tax return, they are not automatically qualified for a stimulus payment.

I filed amended return last year claiming my son, so I didn't get either of the stimulus payments for him.   When I finished doing my taxes Turbo Tax didn't ask if I was missing stimulus money for a dependent.   Why wasn't this asked, my son was not claimed last year.

Your amended return may not have been processed yet which could potentially be why you never received the stimulus payment for your son.

However, when you prepare your tax return this year, you will be prompted to enter your information regarding your stimulus payment.

If you were eligible to receive the stimulus payments and did not receive them or only received a partial amount, you can claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your tax return this year.  This will allow you to claim a credit on your 2020 income tax return for any stimulus payments you should have received but never actually received.

You will need to log back into TurboTax.

  1. In the Federal section, select Other Tax Situations interview section at the top of the screen.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom and select Let's keep going.  This will take you to the input section for the Recovery Rebate credit.
  3. Be sure to indicate the actual amount of each stimulus payment you received on the page that asks if you received a stimulus payment.  There will be two boxes and both need to be completed.

See the following link for additional information on the credit and when it applies.
