We were prevented from e-filing this year because of an error in Turbotax Desktop. It flagged 2 W2's as being duplicates when they were not. The W2's in question were from the same EID and issued to the same person and both had "0" in box 1, but other boxes had different numbers.
No matter what we did, Turbotax flagged these as duplicates whenever the EID was the same and the box 1 amounts were the same. I refused to let us accept the W2s and e-file.
The turbotax engineers need to look beyond box 1 and EID when comparing for duplicate W2s or needs to allow the user to ignore the error and file anyway. we tried to explain this to the customer service agent over the phone and she was able to replicate exactly what we saw on her end but refused to submit a ticket for the bug unless we shared our entire tax return file, even though she had reproduced the error independently.
Try putting $1 in box 1 on one of them. It shouldn’t make a difference.
That's not the right way to fix this. we ended up mailing in the returns, but unless Intuit fixes this for next year it will continue to be a problem.
The problem really lies in the fact that they are ONLY comparing EID and box 1 to determine duplicate W2. They need to implicate the code to check ALL the boxes.
