You will enter your child's information in "My Info" if you are using TurboTax Desktop, or "About Me" if you are using TurboTax Online.

There are basically five tests to determine if your children can be claimed by your mom as a dependent on her tax return.

They are as follows:

  1. They must be your child, adopted child or foster child, brother or sister or a descendant of one of these. (i.e. This requirement is met if they are your grandchildren.)
  2. They lived with you more than half of the year (these exceptions apply).
  3. They are under the age of 19 (unless they are a full-time student. In that case it is age 24. They can be any age if totally and permanently disabled.
  4. You provided more than half of their support
  5. Your child does not file a joint return with anyone else (unless to claim a refund of taxes paid or withheld).

Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number.    Careful— do not say that your child’s SSN is not valid for employment.  If your child was born in 2024 make sure you said he lived with you the whole year.  There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support.  Say NO to that question.
