I need form 8936. Why isn’t it ready? H&R Block has it for efile. What is the hold up?

Totally AGREE.  I have several friends that have already had their taxes submitted AND ACCEPTED by the IRS using H&R Block with form 8936 EV credit included.  It makes no sense why H&R Block is able to do this and TT is not.  \i/

That's strange since the IRS has not even published the paper/pdf 2017 of that form yet.  The latest 8936 form is the 2016 version and the IRS electronic form schema is usually released by the IRS about a week or so after the pdf versions is released.  Without the IRS 2017 schema specifications the 2017 e-file version cannot be produced.  (I wonder if they are trying to use the old 2016 version of the form).

TurboTax shows a 3/1 release date for that form.

The IRS also shows a 3/1 date on the IRS site:

It is odd but I have seen one of their returns to verify and it definitely has 8936 with a 2017 date on the form and I have seen their IRS acceptance confirmation.

You're right.  The form I see from IRS online is 2016.  But I was especially confused because Turbotax had originally listed 2/15 as the date for the form release.  And if others have filed it... could they have run out of forms?  What the heck?  Thanks for your responses.

When the IRS changes the date, TurboTax also must push it out.  The IRS originally had a 2/12 date, now it is 3/1.

I don't believe they will have it on 3/1.  They change the date every week.

You might be right.

Because the IRS keeps changing the date.

TT does not create or submit the form the IRS does.   The IRS creates an electronic version of the form called a schema which is a data protocol that tells TT how to encrypt the from data so the IRS computer can decrypt it.  The IRS has not done that and keeps pushing the estimated date out.

The "form" you see is simply a look alike of the paper version for the form that is only used for your data entry.  e-file "forms" never get transmitted to the IRS, only the encrypted data that you entered gets sent to the IRS and must be in the format specified by the IRS or the IRS computer could not read it.

Blame it on Congress and last minute tax law changes - the IRS has never been known to act quickly.  Don't be surprised if some of the forms that the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 changed on Feb 9th are not available until sometime this summer.

Looks like I might be jumping over to H&R Block software.  The IRS has now revised the availability date for Form 8936 to 03/15/2018.  Almost another month at this point.   Since TT won't use a photo shopped version and H&R Block is somehow making an unavailable form available, I am going to purchase the H&R Block software and re-enter my taxes today.  2 - $7,500 credits this year and I am not going to wait until 3-15, and possibly another delay, and then be in the backwash of returns waiting on mine.  This is the 2nd time a similar situation has happened, last time I couldn't file until a form was available that I didn't need nor was it even included in my taxes.   Switching to H&R Block today and No more Turbo Tax for me.  (after being a 8 year long user of TT.

Let us know how it works out for you.  The IRS does not allow e-filing forms that are not available.    If anyone else has the form then it is an out of date form and not the required 2017 version that has not yet been released.

I have ditched TurboTax and switched to H&R Block.  Completed entry today and federal and state returns have already been submitted and accepted.  With 2 - $7,500 EV credits this year I was tired of waiting on TT and will not be back.  Thank you H&R Block

H&R is using the Draft 2017 form and information. While you "can" use this, it's not a very good idea, to the point where the IRS specifically marks that form as "DO NOT USE". The use of it will not prevent electronic filing, however A: If the final form differs, they may send a nastygram demanding that you amend your return, and B: The willful use of things labeled "DO NOT USE" is a highly-weighted audit trigger. While it doesn't guarantee an audit (Just like being perfect doesn't guarantee a lack of one), it increases the chances of one substantially.

Folks should wait for the IRS to make the final version of the form available before filing, unless they love audits.

This is from the IRS website today (02/24/2018):
Form 8936
Qualified Plug-in Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit - Known Limitations
3/15/2018
Form 8936, Qualified Plug-in Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit:
This form will only support one qualifying vehicle. If you are trying to claim more than one qualifying vehicle, you will not be able to use this form and e-file your return. - back to list

I am only claiming 1 (one) vehicle. I do not understand. On the Download forms website it reads that it is ready. But not on the known limitations. What can we do? Isn't it that TurboTax should know that one only input 1 (one) EV? For those who input 2 (two) EV's I can see the point, but I do not see the issue of filing with only 1 (one) EV.
Any comments?

Switch to H& R Block Like I did and e-file today.  Even had 2 EV credits and H&R e-filed last Thursday
