I moved to NJ from NYC then received a severance bonus that withheld NYC local tax. Is there a way to get it back when I file?

At the end of September I was laid off from a company based in NYC, where I was also living. I moved to New Jersey on October 15th, and received a severance bonus on the 20th. Unfortunately I didn't update my address in the company's HR portal, so I ended up paying $850 in New York City tax.

Am I owed this money since I was not residing in NYC when the bonus was issued? If so, is there a way I can get the money back when I file my taxes?

If this bonus was due to income earned in NY then  it belongs on the NY return and NY withholding was correct.  You will file a part year NY return and any excess withholdings are automatically refunded.

Thanks for your reply. This was a severance bonus so I wasn't sure if that would be a result of income earned in NY, but also wasn't sure if NYC local tax should have been withheld along with NY State tax.
