I misunderstood what an extension was and didn’t file my 2023 taxes. What do I need to do now?

To complete and file a 2023 tax return using TurboTax you would need to purchase, download and install on a personal computer one of the 2023 desktop editions from this website - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

A 2023 tax return can only be printed and mailed, it cannot be e-filed using TurboTax.

If you paid any taxes with the extension request you need to report that payment on the 2023 tax return.

To enter, change or delete a payment made with an extension request (Federal, State, Local) -

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Deductions and Credits
Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
On Income Taxes Paid, click on the start or update button

On the next screen select the type of extension payment made and click on the start or update button

Or enter federal extension payment in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to federal extension payment

The federal extension payment will be shown on Schedule 3 Line 10. The amount from Schedule 3 Part II Line 15 flows to Form 1040 Line 31

And .....if you did not file a timely  2023 return you will have trouble e-filing 2024.  When it asks for your 2023 AGI try using zero.  If zero does not work then you have to print, sign and mail 2024.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
