Yes, you can file for someone who is incarcerated.  Do you have any questions on filing for an individual who is incarcerated?

Hello there, I'm trying to help my friend incarcerated file his taxes and potentially receive his noncollected stimulus checks. However, before being incarcerated, he is currently homeless and has no income. How do I go about filing for someone without an address? And if you know how, looking up exactly which stimulus check he has not yet collected?

How do I go about filing for someone without an address?  He must get mail somehow ... use a family member or friend's address if possible.

And if you know how, looking up exactly which stimulus check he has not yet collected?  I would simply file for all of them ... first 2 on the 2020 return and the third on the 2021 return and the IRS will figure it out automatically.

Also note that you must either (1) have a Power of Attorney for this person, or (2) print the return, have them sign it with a pen, and then file it by mail.  But note that mailed returns can take 6 months to process.

How do I file for an incarcerated person? He’s only been incarcerated since November of 2024

@OlsonR748 Is the person your spouse?  A family member?  Do you have durable Power of Attorney?
