I'm an MD working only on call, paid only a % of collections if any & no benefits, but I get a W2. Can I file as a contractor?

I'm only available only one day a week and was called in only 35 weeks out of 52 last year.  No pay when there's no one to be seen or they don't collect. Does the money have to be treated as salary or can I file as a contractor?

No, if you receive a W-2 reporting your income, then you must file the W-2 to report your wages and taxes that have been withheld on your behalf.

If you prefer to be treated as a contractor and be responsible for paying your own self-employment tax (Social Security and Medicare tax) as well as your income tax, then you should negotiate that with the company.
