I'm a student with very little income and thought that I could use Turbotax for free. It wants to charge me $133 which is more than I paid in. Only getting $80 refund

-Use this IRS site for other ways to file for free.  There are 8  free software versions available from the IRS Free File site

most likely you have self-employment income that requires a higher version (read that as a more costly version)

Yes correct, I did my son’s taxes Thinking it would be easy as he just had a summer job and in college, and the FREE TurboTax cost me $133. How are they able to do that? I continued to refuse deluxe and all the other crap that was offered for that price, but I still paid $133 and I did  the taxes myself!! He owes $577 and federal and $14 state. SMH. And no, no self employment for the. College kid

Not everyone qualifies for free filing.  Free filing is only for simple returns.

Situations covered (assuming no added tax complexity):

  • W-2 income
  • Interest or dividends (1099-INT/1099-DIV) that don’t require filing a Schedule B
  • IRS standard deduction
  • Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC)
  • Student loan interest deduction

Situations not covered:

  • Itemized deductions claimed on Schedule A
  • Unemployment income reported on a 1099-G
  • Business or 1099-NEC income
  • Stock sales (including crypto investments)
  • Rental property income
  • Credits, deductions and income reported on other forms or schedules

If you don’t have a Form 1040 return with limited credits, we have other paid options to file using TurboTax.
