I'm a commercial airline pilot currently based in Newark NJ but live in nyc. My employer withdrew ny taxes. Do i have to file NJ non resident tax?

Yes, if you are based in NJ and you live in NY you will have to file tax returns in both states.

 

  • You will pay income tax on your NJ wages.
  • However, you will get a credit on your NY tax return for those taxes.
  • If NY has a higher tax rate you will pay the excess.
  • If NY has a lower tax rate you do not get credit for the excess paid in NJ.
